“Healing Voices” – a new social action documentary about mental health – is scheduled to be released via community screening partners in a coordinated global event taking place between April 27 and May 5, 2016. Written and Directed by PJ Moynihan of Digital Eyes Film, “Healing Voices” explores the experience commonly labeled as ‘psychosis’ through the stories of real-life individuals, and asks the question: What are we talking about when we talk about ‘mental illness’? The film follows three subjects – Oryx, Jen, Dan – over nearly five years, and features interviews with notable international experts on the history of psychiatry and the rise of the ‘medical model’ of mental illness.
In partnership with the Kiva Center, Alternatives will screen the film Wednesday, April 27 beginning at 7:00PM at the Singh Performance Center at Alternatives’ Whitin Mill,
60 Douglas Road, Whitinsville, MA. The screening is free to attend and will be followed by an audience discussion with several panelists including one of the three subjects the film follows. Those planning to attend should RSVP to Liz Mirabelli Nye at 508-234-6232 or Liz.MirabelliNye@AlternativesNet.org.
“What we refer to as ‘mental illness’ in our culture is widely discussed and debated, but not very well understood,” said Director PJ Moynihan. “These screenings are an opportunity for a range of demographic groups to come together and engage in a dialogue about a very complex social issue.”
The Kiva Center, located in Worcester, MA, is the connection center for the Recovery Learning Community and provides support for people recovering from mental health challenges. Alternatives helps individuals with psychiatric or developmental disabilities build successful lives in the community – lives that include real homes, real jobs and real relationships.
