Uxbridge Lions in Growing Mode, Partnering with Alternatives

UXBRIDGE — The Uxbridge Lions Club is enjoying a growth spurt adding five new members since its Charter Celebration last September.

And that is not all that’s growing. Partnering with Beautify Uxbridge and Alternatives, Inc., the Uxbridge Lions participated in purchasing, planting and maintaining flowers on medians and other locations bringing color and beauty to our town. Finding ways to express its motto “We Serve,” the Lions reached out to Beautify Uxbridge to help support that group’s efforts to continue to make Uxbridge a place of pride and beauty, and further reached out to Alternatives in Whitinsville to help fund the project engaging and interacting with those Alternatives serves in maintaining the various locations around Uxbridge.

Meeting in July, the Uxbridge Lions welcomed the 2016-17 year leading into the Centennial Celebration of Lions Clubs International by the swearing in of newly elected officers by District Governor Lisa Nelson: Diane Seely, President; Kathy Smith, Treasurer; Peter Shannon, Secretary; Cathy Thornton, Membership Chair; Debbie Abate, Tail Twister. Also at the meeting were representatives from Alternatives including Jorge Caraballo who helps with Beautify Uxbridge. In keeping with its partnership with Alternatives, the Uxbridge Lions participated in the Valley Friendship Tour 2016 in June raising funds both for Alternatives and Uxbridge Lions charities.

This fall’s activities will include providing assistance with eye screening at the high school using the Lions’ high tech SPOT equipment, semi -annual Shred It Event shredding paper and hard drives in November and efforts to begin a LEOs Club for high school students in Uxbridge. As in the past two years, the Uxbridge Lions will join the Grafton Lions in its very successful Haunted Hayride fundraiser Oct. 28 and 29, at its facility on Brigham Hill Road in Grafton.

The Uxbridge Lions meet the third Wednesday of each month at 7 P.M. at the Uxbridge Senior Center. Those interested are welcome to sit in at a meeting and see what Lionism is all about.
