The Bridge Launches Shared Living Program

WORCESTER, Mass. (November 28, 2016) —  The Bridge of Central Massachusetts recently launched a residential program to support individuals with developmental disabilities in the community.

Shared Living Services matches individuals with providers willing to open their home and provide daily support and companionship to an adult with a developmental disability.  In return, the provider receives a generous, tax-free stipend, day-to-day guidance and on-going training by The Bridge.  “It’s truly a win-win relationship,” says Ken Bates, President and CEO of The Bridge.  “Individuals live in a more inclusive environment, becoming part of a family’s day to day routine.  In return, families know they are helping someone lead a more fulfilled life, and they earn extra income at the same time.” 

Each caregiver is carefully matched with the individuals (who are referred by the Massachusetts Department of Developmental Services).  Interests, hobbies and backgrounds are considered when finding a mutually beneficial living arrangement.  Caregivers pledge to provide needed supports, such as personal care assistance, transportation to/from medical appointments, medication administration (if needed) and assisting the individual to find and participate in social activities.   To date, two individuals have been placed in local homes, and The Bridge hopes to place 8-10 more in the next few months.

Qualifications include the willingness to share a home with an available bedroom (that may or may not need to be wheelchair accessible, depending upon the individual’s needs).   A valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle are required, along with passing training such as CPR, first aid, fire safety, nutritional standards, human rights, boundaries, etc.  Criminal background checks will be conducted.
