Worcester-based nonprofit recognized for high standards in health and human services
WORCESTER—Open Sky Community Services, a Worcester-based nonprofit providing behavioral health and human services, has earned a three-year accreditation from CARF International, marking its adherence to internationally recognized benchmarks for quality care.
“CARF commended Open Sky for demonstrating substantial adherence to its rigorous standards, emphasizing commitment to delivering high-quality services and supporting individuals to lead their best lives,” said Open Sky president and CEO Ken Bates in the announcement.
CARF International’s accreditation process involves an intensive three-day site survey, during which surveyors evaluate program operations, observe service delivery, review policies and financial records, and conduct confidential interviews with employees, board members, and individuals served by the organization.
The CARF report highlighted Open Sky’s strengths, including:
A strong commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) initiatives.
- Positive impacts of programs like Community Housing, Supported Living, and Employment Services.
- A culture of collaboration and professionalism among staff.
“CARF accreditation has been the recognized standard of quality health and human services for more than 50 years,” the announcement noted, emphasizing that accreditation signals a provider’s commitment to continuous improvement, community accountability, and measurable outcomes.
Open Sky serves more than 8,000 individuals annually across nearly 150 programs in Central Massachusetts, addressing challenges such as mental health, intellectual and developmental disabilities, substance use disorders, and homelessness. The organization also emphasizes race equity and strives to foster growth and transformation through its services.
