February 2019

Beat the winter blues by doing something different and creative right here in your own community! Participate in one or both of these (almost) spring events. The very popular 7th Annual Art Palette Contest and 10th Annual One Act Play Festival on the Mumford. Every year these two inclusive events bring hundreds of people of all ages and abilities together to celebrate our creative community. And it doesn’t hurt that there are cash prizes at stake!

In collaboration with The Artist Palette Studio, The Art Palette Contest, which invites participants to transform an ordinary wooden art palette into a unique work of art, will open on Friday, March 8 from 4:30 – 7:30 PM in the Spaulding R. Aldrich Heritage Gallery at the Whitin Mill, 50 Douglas Road in Whitinsville, MA. During this time, and until April 5, guests of the Gallery may cast their vote for their favorite palettes. Winners will receive cash awards in three different categories and age groups.

“The Art Palette Contest is by far our very favorite exhibit!” says Cristi Collari, Director of Community Outreach for Open Sky. “People of all ages, abilities and walks of life start out with the same wooden art palette and they all come back so different! The ingenuity, creativity and talent are simply amazing to look at all together on the Gallery walls!”

For more information about participating in the 7th Annual Art Palette Contest please visit: openskycs.org/news-events/events. This event is sponsored by Jerry’s Artarama, ValleyCAST and Open Sky Community Services. Purchase palettes for $15 each now through February 22 at the Gallery. Completed palettes are due back to the Gallery by March 1. Voting ends April 5. Exhibit ends April 26.

Just two weeks after the opening of the Art Palette Contest, the public is invited back to the Whitin Mill to attend the 10th Annual One Act Play Festival on the Mumford. This two-day theatrical event takes place on Friday and Saturday, March 22 and 23 at 7:00 PM in the Singh Performance Center, 60 Douglas Road, Whitinsville, MA. The Festival will include comedies, dramas, published works and several original pieces presented by area theater companies and laymen alike. The Festival will be judged and trophies and cash awards will be presented after the last act on Saturday evening.

The One Act Play Festival is “a weekend of amazing, original, inventive and top notch one act plays. Truly inspiring!” says Skip Shea, 2016 judge and award-winning filmmaker, writer, artist and actor from Massachusetts.

Participants and attendees of the One Act Play Festival are invited to enjoy a reception in the Heritage Gallery on opening night, Friday, March 22 from 6 – 7:15 PM.
