Worcester-based Open Sky Community Services has promoted Levi Ekstrom to director of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging at the $119-million human services nonprofit.

In his new role, Ekstrom will work to sustain Open Sky’s commitment to inclusivity, collaborating with fellow agency leaders to execute DEIB strategies throughout the organization. He most recently served as the nonprofit’s DEIB manager, according to a Wednesday press release.

Open Sky’s DEIB director role is the highest-ranking DEI position in the organization, Molly McKinney, an Open Sky media relations consultant, wrote in an email to WBJ.

“Levi has established himself as a highly effective member of the DEIB team at Open Sky, and we are thrilled to welcome him into this new leadership role,” Ken Bates, Open Sky president and CEO, said in the release.

In his prior role as DEIB manager, Ekstrom led organization-wide events, held diversity trainings, and oversaw communications for the department’s initiatives. Before joining Open Sky, he was a fellow for Men4Choice, a nonprofit supporting women’s rights to abortion care, and worked as a race and gender equity advocate at YWCA Central Massachusetts in Worcester, according to his LinkedIn profile.

“Levi’s expertise and his genuine passion for making positive change will enhance Open Sky’s efforts to celebrate diversity and foster a sense of belonging for all employees,” Bates said in the release.

Ekstrom replaces Stephen Osei-Bonsu, who held the role from July 2022 until May 2025, according to his LinkedIn profile. The DEIB director position had remained vacant after his exit, with Ekstrom taking on more of the director role’s duties while still working as DEIB manager, said McKinney.

Ekstrom graduated with his bachelor’s degree from Westfield State University.

Open Sky is Central Massachusetts’ seventh-largest human services nonprofit when ranked by total revenue for the most recent fiscal year available, according to data collected by WBJ’s Research Department.

In fiscal year 2023, the organization generated $119.34 million in revenue, according to nonprofit financial tracker GuideStar.
